As a small business owner with a degree in Entrepreneurship and Finance, I thought I had it covered with the financial end of things. But they didn’t teach me “in the trenches” bookkeeping, accounting, and finance in school. When I first started out, I tried lots of things.
Having an interested employee do our bookkeeping.
Employing a large accounting firm.
Contracting an independent bookkeeper.
They all got it wrong. You know why?
They didn’t ask me the right questions.
They didn’t ask me the right questions because they didn’t even know I needed it. They hadn’t been in the trenches of a very small business. They hadn’t worked for a company where the CEO, CFO, and COO were all the same person.
I even tried doing it myself. But when I first started out, I didn’t know to ask myself these questions either! And certainly no one sat down with me to figure it out together.
The result was a bookkeeping file that was a mess of information but none of it made sense to me. And remember… I have a degree in Finance!
Because it didn’t make sense, I didn’t use it the way I should have. I had professionals working on my file, yet my checking account balance didn’t match the statements. Chart of account balances that didn’t pass the common sense sniff test. And reports were irrelevant to me because I didn’t need the information they were reporting.
It all boiled down to one thing: the people working in my financial file either didn’t know or didn’t care enough to do the right work. I needed specific things and I wasn’t getting it.
So I rolled up my sleeves and did it myself. And what I learned in the process was invaluable.
I now have a proven process to get your files in ship-shape form and your information in a format that is valuable and useful to you. It's the information you need if you are to act as your company's CFO.
I wish I had a person-like-me-now to hire when I was just starting out. I would have saved countless hours correcting mistakes, but more importantly – I would have had the information I needed, when I needed it. I would have avoided costly mistakes.
I have seen it all - there's no job I won't tackle. From nonexistent bookkeeping for five years (which means no taxes filed either), to a tangled mess of numbers that don't make any sense to the business owner, to adequate bookkeeping that worked for IRS purposes but doesn't get looked at because it's not tracking the information that is relevant to the business owner.
So don't wait a minute longer to get your finances in order. Hiring me for your books is like getting a bookkeeper, accountant, and a de facto CFO. And if you want me to take on full CFO duties, I can do that too.... Without the full-time CFO price tag!
